When LEGO prices actually drop: a UK buyer's guide

LEGO holds its price better than almost any toy brand — new sets are rarely discounted anywhere in their first year. But LEGO pricing follows patterns, and if you know them you'll rarely need to pay full price.

The four moments LEGO gets cheaper

• “Retiring soon” sets. When LEGO marks a set as retiring, reductions of 20–40% follow — including on LEGO's own site. This is usually the deepest official discount a set will ever get, because once it's gone, prices go up: retired sets routinely sell above RRP on the secondary market. If a set you want is retiring at 30% off, that's the buy signal.
• January and early-September clearances. Retailers clear shelf space after Christmas and before the autumn range lands. Discontinued lines and overstock go cheap.
• Mid-November (not December). Toy pricing collapses across UK retailers in the run-up to Black Friday — that's when supermarkets and toy chains fight hardest. By mid-December, discounts shrinkbecause retailers know you're out of time. Buy Christmas LEGO in November.
• Multi-retailer price wars on hero sets. A handful of big sets each Christmas become loss-leaders. If several retailers stock a set, check them all — the spread on identical sets can be 30%+.

How to judge a LEGO deal

• Price per piece is the honest measure: most sets carry an RRP around 8–10p per piece; anything under about 7p after discount is strong, under 5–6p is excellent (licensed themes run pricier than City or Creator).
• Points and freebies aren't discounts. Insider points and gift-with-purchase promos have value, but a plain 30% price cut beats them almost every time.
• Check the set number. Same name, different year, different contents — the set number (e.g. 42211) is the only reliable identity when comparing across retailers.
